The Big Data Institute of Shenzhen University was founded in 2013. It is a comprehensive institution in the university, focusing on discipline building, graduate education, fundamental research, technology development and applications in the area of big data. The institute is devoted to its work to meet the requirements of the national big data strategy and insistent to the ideas of high starting point, high quality research and internationalization. The institute is committed to become the South China base in the area of big data for technology innovation, professional training, industry service and international exchange.

The institute has 4 professors, 4 associate professors, 9 assistant professors and 6 postdoc research associates. The research leaders include IEEE Fellow, the Guangdong provincial leading scientist and Shenzhen Peacock High-Caliber talents. Two research leaders received the first class provincial science and technology awards. There are 10 PhD students and more than 20 Master students in the institute in 2016, including some overseas international PhD students.

The institute has undertaken more than 20 research projects funded by central, provincial and city governments. It has also projects funded by industry. Accumulative funding has exceeded 20 million RMB. The staff in the institute has published over 100 scientific papers and applied several patents.

The institute has over 1000 M2 space, providing excellent work environments. It has its own data center and advanced platform for big data research and development.

The Institute emphasizes on research problems identified from industry applications of big data and pursues the original innovations of theories and technologies. The areas of fundamental research include: big data oriented sampling methods and ensemble learning framework, machine learning methods and algorithms for big data, statistical learning, approximate computation, etc. The key technology developments include: parallel and distributed algorithms, high throughput ETL processing, high performance indexing and search, new data mining algorithms, visualization, data security and privacy protection.

The institute is the Shenzhen University host organization of Guangdong Province Big Data Collaborative Innovation Center. The participating organizations of the innovation center include Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University and Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology. The institute is also undertaking the establishment of State Information Center Shenzhen Big Data Institute.

Dr. Joshua Zhexue Huang, Distinguished Professor of Shenzhen University, State Information Center Shenzhen Big Data Institute, Deputy Director of Guangdong Province Big Data Collaborative Innovation Center. Pioneer researcher in categorical and mixed data clustering algorithms in data mining. He published a series of k-means type clustering algorithms, such as k-modes k-prototypesw-k-means, which are widely used in many areas and included in monographs and text books as well as some software products. He received his PhD degree from The Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH).
